I am working on a landscape with an ocean in the background (about the top third of the painting). I am not sure what brush I should use for the water. Also, how do I get that foam effect on the waves? It just looks like a flat blue and when I try to paint on the foam, it doesn't look natural.

I am working on a landscape with an ocean in the background (about the top third of the painting). I am not sure what brush I should use for the water. Also, how do I get that foam effect on the waves? It just looks like a flat blue and when I try to paint on the foam, it doesn't look natural. One of my mottos is "always use the largest brush for the job". I find that beginning painters tend to be afraid to make mistakes and therefore choose too small a brush and end up with streaky brush marks and taking too long to cover an area. You also mention that the blue color looks flat. Try loading your brush with several colors of paint (not just blue, but also try green and purple...) and let the colors mix and mingle on the canvas rather than mixing a shade of blue and applying it or using a blue color straight from the tube. Hope that helps! As for the effect of the foam...I assume you mean that it is running onto the beach. I work in acrylic primarily so that is how I will respond to you. I use primarily white paint with a tint (a tiny amount) of another color--any color. Could be blue or purple or pink or... Use a large brush to slide the foam shapes onto the beach, then go back over with a stiff bristle brush, such as a medium to large flat brush and use just a tiny bit of white paint on the tip to stipple on texture of the foam over your foam shapes. Easier to demonstrate than describe!! One of my free techniques videos may help you with this (and other things that may be of interest too!). I develop a simple painting in a 3 part series called Sunset Skies and Oceans. You can find it here: www.CJArts.net/painting-tips Happy painting! Let me know if I can help any further!

Wow, I hadn't been to your website yet. I just watched part of the first one and I will hopefully have some time tomorrow to watch the whole series of tips. This is just what I was looking for. I don't quite understand the brush loading thing, but hopefully that will clear up when I watch the video.
